Spoonbill

Spoonbill or Paddlefish are a very unique fish species. They don't strike or feed like most other fish. They open their large mouths up and let micro-plankton sift through their mouths. That's what they eat.
The way we catch them is by dragging a large barbless treble hook over them and snagging them. This sounds illegal or bad, but it's the only way to catch them.

This is the biggest spoonbill ever caught in Oklahoma. It weighed 164 lbs and was caught on Lake Keystone. One of the lakes we fish at. Unfortunately, it was caught on one of the off days where you must immediately release any spoonbill caught. So he couldn't get it officially weighed. I'm sure he had a fun time dealing him in anyway. The fish is alive and well, waiting to set that record by another lucky angler. I wasn't the guide on this fish. Just sharing. All Keystone Spoonbill are CPR.

Spoonbilling Oklahoma
The days of snagging from the bank are a thing of the past. You get hung up all the time. When you get a fish on, you might get into other peoples line as you run down the bank reeling it in. The currents are so strong that, depending on how big the fish is and where it's hooked at, you might not be able to land it.
